News Update: New Sponsored Parent visa (Subclass 870) Will be Open from 1 July 2019

This much-awaited Sponsored Parent visa allows families to reunite and the parents of Australians to spend longer period of time of 5 years with their children and grandchildren in Australia.

Application Process

This new visa contains two stages:

1.     Sponsorship Application

2.     Visa Application

Although there is no legislation that has been drafted to confirm the implementation of this new subclass visa, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has made an announcement of the following:

On 1 March 2019, Minister Coleman announced that applications to sponsor a parent for a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa will be open from 17 April 2019.

This means that the sponsorship application will be open from 17 April 2019. Once the sponsorship application has been approved, a sponsored parent will then be able to apply for a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa which is intended to be open from 01 July 2019.

Note: Visa applications must be lodged within six (6) months of sponsorship approval.

Eligibility and Conditions

To be eligible, the parent must be the biological, adoptive, or step-parent of the sponsor, who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Visa holders will generally be subject to a “no work” condition.

Costs and Statistics

The sponsorship application fee is $420.00.

The visa application charge is:

·       $5,000 for a visa of up to three years’ duration; or

·       $10,000 for a visa of up to five years’ duration.

The visa application charge is payable in two instalments, with one payment at time of application and the remainder paid prior to visa grant.

It has also been estimated that up to 15,000 Sponsored Parent visas may be granted each program year (from 01 July to 30 June).
