Bringing Your Parents to Australia

It has always been known that bringing your parents to Australia, if you are an Australian permanent resident or citizen can take a long time, unless you have a lot of money.

The Australian Government does not prioritise family migration applications and instead impose a priority order and cap on the number of migrants allowed each year. The visa subclass are now provided this priority order:

  • 100 – Partner

  • 101 – Child

  • 102 –Adoption

  • 103 – Parent

  • 114 – Aged Dependent Relative

  • 115 – Remaining Relative

  • 116 – Carer

  • 117 – Orphan Relative

  • 143 – Contributory Parent

  • 173 – Contributory Parent (Temporary)

  • 300 – Prospective Marriage (Temporary)

  • 309 – Partner (Provisional)

  • 445 – Dependent Child

  • 801 – Partner (Permanent)

  • 802 – Child

  • 804 – Aged Parent

  • 820 – Partner (Temporary)

  • 835 – Remaining Relative

  • 836 – Carer

  • 837 – Orphan Relative

  • 838 – Aged Dependent Relative

  • 864 – Contributory Aged Parent

  • 884 – Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary)

The cap imposed means that, once the number of visa places available for the program year, they will no longer process any further applications. They will instead be queued to be considered in the subsequent years

As of October 2019, Parent visa applications from August 2010 are now being processed, indicating a delay of over 9 years. However, in actual fact, there is a delay of up to 30 years now for new applications due to the increased applications since 2010 and the reduced places. To allow for a speedy reunion, the Government introduced the Subclass 870 visa in April 2019. However, even this visa is subject to 10,000 visas per year only.

Many people are complaining that the 30-year wait renders the visa program effectively useless. If you do not want to wait 30 years, the Australian Government allows a faster (uncapped) pathway which is known as the “Contributory” pathways – e.g. Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 173/143). The processing time is now above 4 years and the total costs of these can exceed over $50,000.
