TEMPORARY WORK VISAS

For individuals who wish to come to Australia and work temporarily. There are 5 working visas :

  • 482 visa - Temporary Skill Shortage (Class VC) - Subclass 482

  • 407 visa - Training(Class GF) - Subclass 407

  • 408 visa - Temporary Activity Visa (Class GG)- Subclass 408

  • 403 visa - Temporary Work (International Relations) Visa - Subclass 403

  • 457 visa - Temporary Work (Skilled) (Class UC) Visa - Subclass 457

Each of the above working visas is broken down into streams.

PERMANENT RESIDENCY WORK VISAS

For individuals who wish to come to Australia and work permanently. There are 2 permanent residency work visas:

  • 186 visa - Temporary Skill Shortage (Class VC) - Subclass 186

  • 187 visa - Training(Class GF) - Subclass 187

The above permanent visas are further broken down into 3 streams each.

482 Visa - Temporary Skill Shortage - Subclass 482

This is a temporary work visa that allows employers to sponsor foreign employees to work in Australia.

There are 3 different streams under the Temporary Skill Shortage working visa:

  1. Short-term Stream

  2. Mid-term visa Stream

  3. Agreement Stream


494 Visa - Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa - Subclass 494

An Australian Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494) known as ‘SESR’, enables regional employers to address their current labour shortages within their region by bringing in skilled workers when they cannot source local Australians who are appropriately skilled.

There are 3 streams under the Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa:

  1. Employer Sponsored Stream

  2. Labour AgreementStream

  3. Subsequent Entrant Stream

407 Visa - Training - Subclass 407

This visa is for people who wish to work temporarily in Australia for up to 2 years.

There are 3 streams available for the training in Australia visa:

  1. Occupational training required for registration

  2. Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation

  3. Occupational training for capacity building overseas.

408 Visa - Temporary Activity Visa - Subclass 408

This visa allows the any of people from the following 10 streams to come to Australia for temporary activities:

  • Special Program

  • Exchange Arrangement

  • Research activities

  • Sporting Activities

  • Religious Work

  • Entertainment Activities  

  • Social and cultural activity

  • Australian Government Endorsed Events

  • Super yacht Crew

  • Domestic work for executives

The 408 visa generally allows the holder to live in Australia for 2 years.

403 Visa - TEMPORARY WORK (INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS) VISA - Subclass 403

The 403 Temporary Work (International Relations) visa – subclass 403 is intended to facilitate the entry of persons to work or undertake an activity in Australia that serves Australia’s international relations interests.

The subclass 403 visa comprises 6 streams.

457 Visa - Temporary Work (Skilled) visa - Subclass 457

The 457 visa is generally used by the employers to sponsor foreign workers to temporarily fill skilled positions in Australia.

As of March 18, 2018, the Department abolished the subclass 457 visa and replaced it with the 482 visa.

Relevant transitional arrangements have also been made for those 457 applications that have not yet been decided.

Meanwhile, certain 457 visa holders will continue to enjoy the benefits of having the pathway to permanent residency under the Employer Nomination Scheme Subclass 186  or RSMS Subclass 187 visas under the old laws.

186 Visa - Employer Nomination Scheme - Subclass 186

The 186 visa is a permanent visa that lets skilled workers, who are nominated by their employer, live and work in Australia permanently. With the employer nomination visa, a person can:

  • stay in Australia indefinitely

  • work and study in Australia

  • enrol in Australia’s public health care scheme, Medicare

  • sponsor eligible relatives to come to Australia

  • travel to and from Australia for 5 years

  • apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible
