New Legislative Instruments in Facing the Coronavirus Situation

The Department of Home Affairs has extended the travel bans and restrictions a number of times in light of the global coronavirus situation.

 

As the World Health Organisation has declared the coronavirus (COVID-19) as an international public health concern, the Department of Home Affairs had been canceling a number of visas from affected visa holders on the basis that there is a risk in relation to the public health emergency of international concern designated by WHO.

 

The Department of Home Affairs consulted the Department of Health and other industry stakeholders for the need for cancellation of these visas.

 

To combat those being adversely affected by this, the Department introduced a number of legislative instruments that create special arrangements for applicants who are in Australia and whose visas were canceled due to the risk of a public health emergency of international concern. This extends to former student and visitor visa holders that meet the certain criteria specified in the instrument.

What does this mean for the Student visa or Visitor visa holders? 

 There are alternative methods for affected persons to reapply for a student visa or visitor visa and the visa application charge would be nil.
