Extending Prospective Marriage Visa Due to Travel Ban and Inability to Enter Australia

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, many plans have been disrupted.

The prospective marriage visa is a temporary visa allowing partners of Australian permanent residents and Australia citizens to visit Australia to marry their Australian partner. The visa is only valid for 9 months from the visa grant date.

There has been significant complaints and noise surrounding this because those who were granted with visas earlier in the year (or late last year) and failed to enter Australia before the travel ban took effect means that they may risk losing the entire visa because it is unlikely that the borders will reopen any time soon. There have been some news articles about this and how this means a lot of wasted time, money, and resources on the visa process for Australian couples.

If you are affected by the travel bans, we advise that you seek professional advice as soon as possible (as early ahead as possible before your visa expires) to see what are your options to minimize wasted money and time as the processing time on these visas is not short.
