Department of Home Affairs to increase work rights for student visa holders starting 1 July 2023

The Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) has announced that student visa (subclass 500) holder work rights will be increased in order to assist Australia in economic recovery and growth.

Student visa work restrictions were relaxed during the pandemic and were completely removed in January 2022 to allow primary and secondary student visa holders to work more than the 40 hours per fortnight limit to address workforce shortages. However, this will end on 30 June 2023.

But starting on 1 July 2023, work restrictions will be reintroduced, but the cap would be 48 hours per fortnight, an increase of eight (8) hours, to ensure that student visa holders will still be able to focus on getting quality Australian education and qualification while being able to support themselves financially, gain valuable work experience, and contribute to Australia’s workforce needs.
