How Can Training Visa (Subclass 407) Help Develop Your Skills

Looking to develop your skills in Australia for a short period, applying for a Training Visa (Subclass 407) may be the one for you.

Workplace-based training to acquire registration or licensing

This training covers skilled workers who are required to obtain registration, membership, or licensing to start an occupation in Australia, or in their home country. Health practitioners such as nurses, general practitioners, etc. are usually the ones suitable for this occupational training.

A letter from the applicant’s regulatory body advising them that a rigorous training is warranted before getting a mandatory registration or licensing must be attached with the application.

Structured workplace-based training to enhance skills in an eligible occupation

This is for those who are nominated by an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor in Australia for an occupation specified on the list of eligible skilled occupations for a Training Visa.

The training will be structured in such a way that it is specifically tailored and timed to the training needs of the skilled worker nominated for an occupation, which is why the nominee must have recent and suitable prior experience before their application. This could include employment or study experience that:

  1. Is equivalent of at least 12 months of full-time experience in the occupation or related field;

  2. Has occurred within the 24 months before the nomination is lodged.

Only occupations specified in the legislative document Migration (LIN 19/050: Specification of Occupations—Subclass 407 Visa) Instrument 2019 are eligible for occupational training under the Training (subclass 407) visa.

Training that sharpens the applicant’s skills or enhances their competency

 The Training (Subclass 407) visa occupational training is further divided into three categories:

  1. Overseas qualification - This is for students who are enrolled in a foreign educational institution that needs completion of practical training, research, or observation in order to get their degree, or to qualify for registration. The training must be specifically tailored to the needs of the nominated person.

  2. Government Support - This is for skilled workers who are supported by a government agency of their home country, or of Australia, to get a structured workplace-based occupational training.

  3. Professional Development - This is for overseas employers who want their employees to undergo a tailored professional development program in order to facilitate their organisation’s growth.
