COVID (Subclass 408) Visa Applications to Halt by 2 September 2023 and Complete Closure by February 2024

In a significant move, the Albanese Labor Government is closing the Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408) - Australian Government endorsed events (COVID-19 Pandemic event) stream. Effective on 01 February 2024, the Covid (subclass 408) visa will be closed to all applicants.

What are the Changes for the Pandemic Event (Subclass 408) Visa?

It is no surprise that the Albanese Government has decided to end the COVID-19 pandemic visa, as recently they ended a series of pandemic measures, including unlimited work hours for international students and work exemptions for Working Holiday visa holders.

From 2 September 2023 onwards, the Pandemic Event visa (subclass 408) will only be available for open applications from existing Pandemic Event (subclass 408) visa holders. This strategic shift underscores the government's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the visa system while allowing for a smooth transition.

As a staged closure approach, all other visa holders will be ineligible to apply for the Pandemic Event visa. Anyone with a valid Pandemic Event visa will remain lawful until their current visa expires.

What is next for COVID (subclass 408) visa holders?

From 2 September 2023, new applications will receive a six (6) month visa and a Visa Application Charge (VAC) will be introduced at $405 AUD.

These settings will further ensure that the visa is only used by those who have a genuine need to remain and contribute to Australia. People who currently hold a Pandemic Event visa and seek to apply for a different visa will need to meet the criteria for that visa. Those without any options for other visa applications are expected to depart Australia when their current visa expires.
