What is VACCU and Why is My Visa Application Being Delayed?

You have recently been notified that your visa application has been referred to the Visa Applicant Character Consideration Unit (VACCU). Trying to understand what VACCU is and what will happen to your visa application, you must also be wondering “how long more will my visa application be processed in VACCU?”

What is the Visa Applicant Character Consideration Unit (VACCU)?

In simple terms, VACCU is a specialised unit within the Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) that is responsible for assessing the character of visa applicants. Typically, these visa applications have failed the initial character test for visa eligibility. VACCU’s primary role is to ensure that individuals entering or remaining in Australia meet the visa character requirements.

Why Your Visa Application Might be with VACCU?

Applicants will be notified if their visa application has been referred to VACCU. The primary reason visa applications are referred to VACCU is when there are concerns about an applicant’s character.

  • This includes applicants who have criminal record(s), pending charges, past convictions or any other factors that may pose a risk to the Australian community.

  • Additionally, if the visa applicant has any associations with activities or organisations that pose a threat to national security, their visa application may be referred to VACCU.

How Long Is the Processing Time in VACCU?

The average processing time with VACCU can vary drastically from 1 month to approximately 2 years, depending on the complexity of the matter, according to the Freedom of Information (FOI). However, it is common to see visa applications that have been pending with VACCU for over 2 years. This is because VACCU requires more time to conduct character assessments.

What Can I Do When My Visa Application is Referred to VACCU?

We highly recommend consulting with one of our Accredited Specialists in Immigration Law, Jason Ling, for tailored advice on what you can do next, especially for visa applications that have been assessed beyond the average processing time. At the same time, prepare supporting evidence, such as character references, evidence of rehabilitation, or any relevant documents that can support your visa application and mitigate character concerns.
