Changes to Australian Citizenship Lodgement Arrangements from 1 November 2021

From 1 November 2021, changes will be made to how applications for Australian citizenship by descent and applications for evidence of Australian citizenship are lodged.

Changes to the Australian Citizenship Lodgement Arrangements

From 1 November 2021, changes to the Australian Citizenship lodgement arrangements will be as follow:

  • Both type of Australian Citizenship applications will need to be made through the Department of Home Affair’s online system, ImmiAccount. Paper applications for both will no longer be available on the Department’s website.

  • To ensure that people who face barrier applying for Australian Citizenship application online are not disadvantaged, the Department will consider individual requests for a paper application form for these two Australian citizenship pathways on a case-by-case basis.

  • Providers of lawful immigration assistance such as registered migration agents and Australian legal practitioners may also request a paper form if they are experiencing significant barriers to using the online channel.

In other words, Australian Citizenship applications must be lodged through the online system and paper-based applications will no longer be accepted.
