Apply for Parent Visa Subclass 103

Parent Visa (Subclass 103) is a type of permanent visa that is available to parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens. The recipient of this visa will be able to relocate or continue living in Australia as a permanent resident and eventually, may be eligible for Australian citizenship. It also provides for the recipient to work and study in Australia, enroll in the public health care system (Medicare), sponsor eligible family members to come to Australia, and travel indefinitely for a 5-year term.

Parent visas, in general, are very high in demand due to an annual cap on the limit placed by the Department. The queue for this particular subclass 103 can last up to 25 - 30 years. If the application for subclass 103 visa is lodged onshore, the Department will not generally grant a Bridging visa to allow the applicants to continue their stay, until a decision is reached.

Sponsorship Obligation for Parent Visa Subclass 103

Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens, above the age of 18, can sponsor their parents to travel to Australia and to live with them for the foreseeable future. In circumstances where the child is below the age of 18 or unable to sponsor, then the Parent can also be sponsored by :

  1. Spouse of the child (he/she/they must be over 18 years of age and an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen)

  2. Close family relative

  3. Legal guardian of your child

  4. Close family relative of your child’s spouse

  5. Legal guardian of your child’s spouse

  6. Community organization

Under subclass 103, the child is able to sponsor more than one parent and this sponsorship covers any applicant who applies for this visa. The sponsor is required to provide an Assurance of Support and must agree to provide the applicant of this visa with support, accommodation, and financial assistance for the initial 2-year period.

Before the application is decided, sponsors are given a leeway to withdraw their application at any point in time and this request must be made in writing to the Parent Visa Centre in Perth. Once a decision has been made the Sponsor will not be able to withdraw their Sponsorship. In instances where a sponsor has failed to comply with sponsorship obligations, the Department might cancel the visa.
