New Regulations for UK Armed Forces Personnel to Australia

The Government of Australia has formally announced modifications pertaining to the personnel of the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom (UK) and their accompanying civilian staff. The Migration Amendment (Status of Forces Agreement—United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) Regulations 2025 establish a streamlined procedure for UK military personnel and their dependents to gain entry into Australia.

What are the New Regulations for UK Military Members?

This is in accordance with the Australia-United Kingdom Defence and Security Cooperation Agreement (SOFA), which was ratified in March 2024. Personnel of the UK armed forces, along with their civilian staff, will be permitted to enter Australia without the need to apply for a visa under the revised regulations. Instead, they will be granted a Special Purpose Visa (SPV).

When will the New Regulations be Implemented?

The amendment for the introduction of the SPV will come into effect once the agreement is formally executed.
