Who can be Considered a Member of the Family Unit (MoFU)?

If you are applying for an Australian visa and want to include your family members as dependents on your visa application, you must qualify as a Member of the Family Unit (MoFU)

What does Member of Family Unit (Mofu) mean?

A Member of Family Unit (MoFU) refers to individuals who are part of the primary applicant’s immediate family and meet the specific criteria. This designation affects who can be included in your visa application and enjoy the same privileges if the visa is granted.

Who Qualifies as MoFU?

As the primary applicant’s immediate family, it can consist of:

  • Spouse or partner

  • Dependent children

  • Children under 18 years old who are dependent on the primary applicant.

  • Children between the ages of 18 and 23 who are financially dependent on the primary applicant due to factors such as studying full-time.

  • Children over 23 who are:

    • wholly or substantially reliant on financial support for the primary applicant to meet basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing.

    • substantially dependent due to physical or mental incapacity.

Unfortunately, if you wish to include your parents or siblings on your application, they may not meet the MoFU requirement. Hence, you may need to seek an alternative pathway for them to join you in Australia. Speak with one of our immigration lawyers for professional advice.

What Are the Requirements as a MoFU?

  • Dependents should provide supporting documentation, such as a marriage certificate or birth certificate, to prove their relationship with the primary applicant.

  • Demonstrating financial support or incapacity for self-care for dependents over 18 years old.

What Are the Implications for Your Visa Application?

Family members who qualify as MoFU can be included in your visa application, allowing them to live, work or study in Australia under the same visa conditions.

However, ensure that family members meet the health and character requirements. Otherwise, it may result in a “one fail, all fail” for everyone’s visa application.
