Updates on Bridging Visa B (BVB) (Subclass 020) Processing and Travel Planning
For visa applicants currently onshore holding a Bridging Visa A (BVA) (Subclass 010), securing a Bridging Visa B (BVB) (Subclass 020) is required if you need to travel internationally and return to Australia while your substantive visa application is still processing. Following a recent stakeholder meeting between the Migration Institute of Australia (MIA) and the Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) on 6 August 2026, there have been some updates regarding BVB processing timeframes and escalation procedures. If you are planning an overseas trip, here is what you need to know to avoid disruptions to your travel and visa status.
The Four-Week Lodgement Rule
DoHA has explicitly advised that all BVB applications should be lodged at least four (4) weeks prior to your intended date of travel. This extended timeframe is operational. The same Departmental team responsible for assessing your pending substantive visa is also responsible for assessing your associated BVB application. These teams require adequate time to review both files.

Avoid Last-Minute Applications
Under the new guidance, applicants should not expect a BVB to be granted in time for travel if they lodge the application only a few days before departure. The only exception to this rule is if you can demonstrate compelling and compassionate circumstances, such as the death or serious illness of a close family member overseas. For standard holidays, business trips, or social events, last-minute lodgements will likely result in you having to reschedule your flights.
Escalation Procedures for Delayed BVBs
If you lodged your BVB application with ample time but it remains pending as your travel date approaches, escalation pathways are available. For applications that remain outstanding, reach out to a professional representative, such as our team at Agape Henry Crux.
What This Means For You?
If you anticipate needing to travel while awaiting your visa outcome, proactive planning is required. Do not book non-refundable flights without first securing your BVB or ensuring you have at least a four-week buffer for processing.
