VETASSESS Announcement in Relation to General Professional Occupations

VETASSESS announced that from 14 February 2019, not only will the general professional occupations be assessed by month and year, but also by days to calculate employment dates. VETASSESS may also be able to consider closely related employment outside the last 10 years, provided it is continuous employment with the same employer within the last 10 years.

Prior to 14 February 2019, VETASSESS only uses month and year to calculate the employment dates. However, from 14 February 2019 onwards, VETASSES will consider the exact date, including day, month and year for the ‘Date Deemed Skilled’.

WHO WILL BE BENEFITTED BY THE CHANGE?

This change could benefit people who have long pre-qualification work experience in some occupations.

Example:

Mr A has work experience as a Chef for the same employer from 01.01.2004 to 31.12.2018. Mr. A obtained his formal qualification at AQF Diploma level equivalent or higher in 2018.

Prior to 14 February 2019:

If Mr. A were to make an assessment on 14 February 2019, VETASSESS would consider employment within the 10-year period (i.e. from 13.02.2009 to 31.12.2018). VETASSESS would use 3 years (13.02.2009 to 12.02.2012) as a period of “qualifying employment” and 1 year (13.02.2012 to 12.02.2013) as a period of employment at an appropriate skill level. The date deemed skilled would be 13.02.2013. As a result, Mr. A could claim points for 5 years of employment.

Post 14 February 2019 guideline:

If Mr. A were to make an assessment on 14 February 2019, VETASSESS would consider employment from 01.01.2004 to 31.12.2018. VETASSESS would use 3 years (01.01.2004 to 31.12.2006) as a period of “qualifying employment” and 1 year (01.01.2007 to 31.12.2007) as a period of employment at an appropriate skill level. The date deemed skilled would be 01.01.2008. However, only employment within the last 10 years could be used for General Skill Migration points. As a result, Mr. A could claim points for 9 years of employment (01.01.2009 to 31.12.2018).
