Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) | Specialist Skills Stream pathway

Since the replacement of the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa on 7 December 2024, the new framework of Subclass 482 has been introduced, and it consists of Core Skills stream, Specialist Skills stream and Labour Agreement stream. Today, let’s dive into the popular work-sponsored visa, Skills in Demand (SID) (Subclass 482) and in more, in the Specialist Skills Stream. 

 

What is the Specialist Skills Stream under Skills in Demand (SID) (Subclass 482)? 

The Specialist Skills stream is a temporary visa that can last up to 4 years. This visa is aimed at attracting highly skilled migrants who can contribute to Australia’s national productivity and expertise in helping to build a more advanced economy.  

 

Who is Eligible for the Specialist Skills Stream Pathway? 

To qualify for Specialist Skills stream, applicants must meet several criteria:  

  • The pathway is open to highly skilled specialists in various fields, and the occupations must be an ANZSCO occupation in Major Group 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6. Occupations excluded are trades workers, machinery operators, drivers, or labourers.

  • Applicants must earn at least AUD 135,000 annually, known as the Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT). This threshold is set to increase in the new financial year from 1 July 2025 onwards. 

  • Applicant must have at least 1 year of equivalent full-time work experience in the last 5 years. (Casual, part-time, and full-time work can be included). 

  • Meet the English requirement of equivalent to at least IELTS 5 in each test component. 

 

What Types of Occupations Are Included for Specialist Skills Stream? 

The Specialist Skills stream is designed to attract talent in occupations that are critical to the economy and innovation. Some potential roles may include: 

  • Engineering Managers developing technological solutions for sustainable energy. 

  • Cybersecurity Specialists helping organisations mitigate cyber threats.  

  • Software Engineers facilitating advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). 

 

What is the Processing Time for the Specialist Skills stream? 

The Department of Home Affairs has committed to a median processing time of 7 days for applications submitted under the Specialist Skills stream.  

How much is the Visa Application Charges (VAC) for the SID – Specialist Skills Stream Visa? 

  • The primary applicant and secondary applicants over 18 years old are AUD 3,115

  • Secondary applicants under 18 years old are AUD 780
