Can I Travel While on a Bridging Visa A with a Partner Visa Application in Process?

You have applied for an Onshore Partner Visa (Subclass 820/801) in Australia. While waiting for your visa application to be processed, you are currently on a Bridging Visa A (BVA) (Subclass 010). You may wonder if you're allowed to travel outside Australia.

What is a Bridging Visa A (BVA) (Subclass 010)?

A Bridging Visa A (BVA) (Subclass 010) allows you to stay in Australia lawfully while your substantive visa application, in this circumstance, your Partner Visa application, is being processed.

What are the Restrictions for BVA (SC 010)?

A BVA typically does not have travel rights. If you decide to leave Australia while on a BVA, it will usually cease, and you may not be able to return unless you obtain a new visa.

What are the Options for Travelling?

If you must travel while holding a BVA, you can apply for a Bridging Visa B (BVB) (Subclass 020), which grants temporary travel rights. This visa allows you to leave and return to Australia while your visa application is being processed. We encourage you to apply for the BVB well ahead of your planned travel dates, as processing times can vary.

What Else Do I Need to Know?

  • Make sure to travel with the correct visa, as it may affect your immigration history.

  • Don’t leave Australia until your BVB is granted, as your BVA will cease, and you may not be able to re-enter without a valid visa.

  • Make sure to check the travel facility expiry date for your BVB to return to Australia before it expires.

  • The Partner Visa can be granted whether you are inside or outside of Australia. However, if you are in the immigration clearance at the time of decision, your visa application may result in a visa refusal
