Can I Become an Australian Citizen Again?
You previously held Australian Citizenship and renounced it, and now you wish to reapply for it. You may be wondering if it is even possible to reapply and acquire Australian Citizenship again.
Can I become an Australian Citizen Again?
In short, it is possible to resume your Australian citizenship again if you voluntarily renounced your Australian citizenship. The process involves submitting an application to the Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) and meeting certain eligibility criteria.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
To be eligible to resume Australian citizenship:
You must satisfy the Department with your identity. Have good character, if you are over 18 years old; and
You will have to provide evidence of how you ceased being an Australian citizen, such as if:
you lost your Australian citizenship when you became a citizen of another country as an adult before 4 April 2002
you gave up or renounced your Australian citizenship to acquire or retain another country citizenship
you renounced Australian citizenship to avoid significant hardship or detriment
your Australian citizenship was revoked as a child when your responsible parent's Australian citizenship ceased
you were an Australian citizen by registration or naturalisation and your Australian citizenship ceased because you resided outside of Australia and New Guinea continuously for 7 years between 26 January 1949 and 8 October 1958
What If I Do Not Meet the Above Requirements? How Do I Regain Australian Citizenship?
You cannot resume Australian citizenship if you do not meet the above requirements. You may be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship by conferral.
How to Apply to Regain Australian Citizenship?
Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria listed above.
Prepare proof of identity, evidence of your previous Australian citizenship, and any other relevant documents.
Submit Form 132 – Application for Resumption of Australian Citizenship.
Pay the application fee. If the application is for a child under 15 years old on the same form as a responsible parent, there is no cost for the child.
Lodge your application with DoHA. Then wait for the application to be processed and decided.
What If I Have a Criminal Record?
If you are over 18 years old, you will need to meet the character requirement. However, if you have any criminal records and wish to regain your Australian citizenship again, we highly suggest that you speak with an Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law to assist with your citizenship application.
