Partner Visa Processing Time and How Couples Can Qualify for Direct PR

Applying for a Partner visa is a huge step for couples who want to build their life together in Australia. One common question is: how long will it take? Partner visa processing times vary greatly, and in some cases, couples may even be eligible for a direct grant of permanent residency (PR)

What Are the Current Partner Visa Processing Times?

According to the Department of Home Affairs (DoHA), the partner visa processing times generally range from 12 months to 24 months. The time frame depends on the type of visa you apply for, whether you apply onshore or offshore, and whether your application is decision-ready.

Estimated processing times as of September 2025:

Processing can be faster if your application is decision-ready at lodgement, with all required evidence attached. Incomplete or inconsistent applications frequently receive requests for additional information from DoHA, which can result in delays.

The Two-Stage Partner Visa Process

Partner Visa applicants typically go through a two-stage process

  1. Temporary/Provisional Stage: Subclass 820 (onshore) or 309 (offshore). Allows you to live, work, and study in Australia while awaiting permanent residency (PR).

  2. Permanent Stage: Subclass 801 (onshore) or 100 (offshore). Grants full permanent residency (PR) status, freedom to travel, and eligibility for citizenship later on. This stage is usually assessed 2 years after the lodgement of your initial application date.

How Couples Can Qualify for Direct PR (Double Grant)

In some cases, established long-term couples may skip the two-stage process, have a shorter processing time and receive both the temporary and permanent Partner visas at the same time. This is known as a double visa grant or direct PR pathway. If you wish to determine if you are eligible for a direct PR partner visa pathway, consult with our immigration lawyer to receive tailored visa advice and assistance.
