Can Australian Citizenship be Revoked? What You Need to Know
When life circumstance changes, it can lead Australian citizens to consider renounce your Australian citizenship. Whether driven by international residency requirements or other personal reasons, understanding the potential consequences is important before deciding to lose your Australian citizenship status. Let’s break it down for you.
What is the Australian Citizenship Renunciation Process?
Australian citizens can formally renounce their citizenship, but only if certain conditions are met:
You must already be a dual citizen, which is holding citizenship of another country, or
You must be assured of acquiring another citizenship immediately after renouncing your Australian citizenship.
What are the Citizenship Renunciation Requirements?
To formally renounce the Australian citizenship, you must meet the following requirements:
Be over 18 years old.
Be a national or citizen of another country.
Provide an acknowledgement to Australia’s citizens and requirements.
What Happens to the Children?
If a parent renounces Australian citizenship, their children under the aged of 18 years old may also lose their Australian citizenship. The Minister must decide, ensuring the child won’t become stateless (having no citizenship) and that at least one parent isn’t an Australian citizen or deceased Australian citizen. Lost citizenship can be regained later.

The Australian Government may refuse your renunciation request if:
The Minister is not satisfied of your identity.
Australia is engaged in a war.
It is deemed against Australia’s national interest.
It would result in you becoming stateless.
