When Will I Be Invited to a Citizenship Ceremony?
Becoming an Australian citizen is a proud and significant moment, and the citizenship ceremony is the final step in the process. Typically, after receiving a citizenship grant and completing the citizenship test, you may be wondering: “When will I be invited to attend a ceremony?”
What Is a Citizenship Ceremony?
The citizenship ceremony is a formal event in which you make the Australian Citizenship Pledge, confirming your commitment to Australia and its values. It marks the official moment you become an Australian citizen.
When Will I Receive an Invitation?
If your citizenship application is approved, you will typically be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony within an average of 6 months. However, timing may vary depending on:
Your local council’s availability
Ceremony scheduling in your area
The number of approved applications waiting for a place
Whether you applied through a conferral or descent, or other pathway
You will receive a formal invitation letter or email from the Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) or your local council approximately 4 weeks before the ceremony's scheduled date.
How Can I Check My Ceremony Status?
To check the status of your ceremony invitation:
Log in to your ImmiAccount.
Look for the ‘Citizenship Approval’ notice.
Monitor your email regularly.
You can also contact your local council to check upcoming ceremony dates or confirm your place on their list.
Who Should Attend the Ceremony?
You need to attend a citizenship ceremony if you:
Were 16 years or older when you applied
Do not have a permanent or enduring incapacity
You are not required to attend a citizenship ceremony and make the pledge if you:
Are a child under 16 years old
Are granted Australian citizenship by descent or adoption
Are resuming your Australian citizenship
Have been assessed as having a permanent or enduring physical or mental incapacity
Were born in Papua before 16 September 1975 to an Australian citizen
Were born to a former Australian citizen
Were stateless when born in Australia
What Happens at the Ceremony?
During the ceremony, you will:
Take the Australian Citizenship Pledge
Receive your citizenship certificate
Join other new citizens in a formal and celebratory event
Local councils conduct most ceremonies and family and friends are welcome to attend.
