Applying for Australian citizenship is a milestone for many! However, it is also important to recognise that a grant is not guaranteed, and various factors can lead to refuse your citizenship application.
What are the Requirements for Australian Citizenship by Conferral?
To become an Australian citizen, you have to meet the following core requirements:
Be at least aged 18 years old at the time of the application.
Hold a valid permanent visa at the time of application and when Citizenship application is decided.
Have meet the residency requirement which lived in Australia for 4 years immediately before applying, including 12 months as a permanent resident (PR) with specific amount of time present in Australia.
Have good character.
What are the Common Reasons for Citizenship Refusal?
While meeting the basic requirements is important, various factors can lead to a refusal. Here are some of the common reasons:
Failure to meet the residence requirement in Australia.
Have substantial criminal record or providing false information can result in a character test failure and subsequent refusal.
If the Department is concern of your intention to reside in Australia.
Submitting incomplete or false information on your application can lead to refusal under Public Interest Criterion (PIC) 4020.
