NSW Government Announces National Innovation Visa (NIV) (SC858) Nomination Criteria
The New South Wales (NSW) Government revealed nomination criteria for the new National Innovation Visa (NIV) (Subclass 858) program. Excitingly for many who are waiting for the NIV visa process, it has been announced that the nomination process is set to begin in early July 2025.
Are You Eligible to Apply for NIV (SC858) Nomination?
The NSW Government will support nominations through 5 pathways as outlined in Ministerial Direction No. 112 (MD 112):
Academic and Researcher
Entrepreneur
Innovative Investor
Sports Professional
Creative Professional
Nominations will be selected through an Expression of Interest (EOI)-led process, targeting individuals with a proven track record of innovation and impact.
What Do I Need to Know Regarding the NIV (SC858) Process?
NSW nominations indicate support for applicants aligned with state strategic priorities, but do not equate to a visa grant. The Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) makes final visa decisions based on national criteria and program limits.
Receiving a state nomination can strengthen an applicant’s visibility within DoHA’s selection process, but it does not guarantee an invitation for a visa.
The NIV program is highly competitive and demands high merit and achievement. It is intended for established professionals rather than early-career individuals or recent graduates.
While nominations will primarily fit within the 5 pathways, NSW maintains a flexible approach for candidates surpassing expectations set by MD 112.
All claims submitted by applicants will go through third-party validation by industry experts or authorities to ensure credibility.
