New Lodgement Rules for the Maritime Crew Visa (Subclass 988)
The Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) has updated the procedures for lodging a valid Maritime Crew (Subclass 988) visa. The new Migration (Arrangements for Maritime Crew Visa Applications) Instrument 2026 (LIN 26/025) which will commence on 1 November 2026, to modernise and streamline the application process. While the primary method of application remains the same, the key updates provide a more practical approach for those unable to apply online.
What is Staying the Same for Maritime Crew Visa (SC988)?
For most applicants, the process remains unchanged. If you provide an email address and consent to electronic communication regarding your application, you must continue to apply online through ImmiAccount using Form 1273 (Internet).
What is Changing for Maritime Crew Visa (SC988)?
The significant update relates to applicants who cannot apply online.
Previously, these applicants were required to complete a physical paper Form 1273 and lodge it via post or courier, a requirement that often proved impractical for seafarers. Under the new instrument, this requirement has been adjusted:
Applicants can no longer simply mail a paper form.
To use the paper form 1273, the applicant must now be authorised in writing by the Department.
Once authorised, the applicant must lodge the form strictly in accordance with the specific directions given by the Department at that time.
This change ensures that alternative lodgement methods are managed more effectively and only utilised when officially approved.
