When Do English Language Test Retakes (OSR/SSR) Apply for Australian Visas?
The Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) has provided clarification on the acceptance of One Skill Retake (OSR) and Single Section Retake (SSR) for English language tests, particularly in light of recent policy changes.
What are the Key Clarifications on OSR/SSR Acceptance for English Tests?
For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025
DoHA now accepts IELTS and Michigan English Test (MET) results that include OSR or SSR for Australian visa purposes.
This acceptance does not apply to Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) visa applicants. The SC482 visa still requires test scores from a single sitting/attempt for all components.
For tests taken on or before 6 August 2025
DoHA accepted IELTS OSR for Australian visa purposes.
This acceptance does not apply to visa subclasses SC482, Temporary Graduate (SC485) Visa and Skilled-Recognised Graduate visa (subclass 476).
What are OSR and SSR?
IELTS OSR allows test takers to retake one of the four test components, which are listening, speaking, reading or writing, within 60 days of their original test.
MET SSR allows test takers to retake one of the three test components, which are listening, reading or writing, within 28 days of their original test.
The current legislation already specifies the required scores, including for IELTS OSR, regardless of whether the test was taken before or after 7 August 2025.
