Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) and Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement: All You Need to Know
With many people wanting to visit Australia, the process can be more complex than just booking a flight and filling up a visa application form. Given the high refusal rates due to GTE, the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement is a major hurdle to securing various Australian temporary visas, especially the popular Visitor Visa (Subclass 600).
What is the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement?
The Australian government uses GTE requirement to assess whether applicants genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily. It aims to prevent individuals from using temporary visas as a stepping stone to achieve permanent residency (PR) or extend their stay indefinitely. In short, the applicant is required to prove that their primary intention is to visit and return home.
How Does GTE Requirement Affect Your Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Application?
You must satisfy the Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) that you are a genuine temporary entrant. The case officer will look at a variety of factors, including and not limited to:
- Your current circumstances, including employment and financial situation
- Your family ties
- Your travel history
- Your home country’s economic stability
- Your travel itinerary
How Do I Overcome GTE?
- Gather supporting evidence that demonstrates your strong incentives to return to your home country, such as: - Proof of ongoing employment or business ownership
- Property ownership
- Evidence of significant financial investments

- Provide a written statement on your reasons for wanting to visit Australia, why you intend to stay temporarily, and why you plan to return home. You can also engage an immigration lawyer to assist you in addressing the GTE requirements for your visa refusal. We have put together a list of “What Do I Provide to My Lawyer for My GTE Statement?”
- If your visa has been refused, you may have the right to appeal the visa decision to the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) within a limited period of time. Speak with an immigration lawyer about your next steps.
